Resources for identifying enslavers

The subreddit r/slaveholders (redlib link) contains links to many online resources documenting “those that kept (or keep) people enslaved & those that benefited (or benefit) from it.”

Below are additional resources not listed in the subreddit:

  • Categories for enslavers & slave traders on WikiTree.
  • the final nail maps businesses within u.s. borders that engage in the torture & killing of animals for fur.
  • This page lists all enslavers documented in the New Jersey Slavery Records database.
  • Civil War Governors of Kentucky's entries for people often include slaveholder status as indicated by census records.
  • Harvey Amani Whitfield's book Biographical Dictionary of Enslaved Black People in the Maritimes identifies the enslavers of the subjects in many cases.
  • Part 1 of the book From Out of the Dark Past Their Eyes Implore Us: The Black Roots of Nelson County, Kentucky lists “NELSON CO., KY SLAVES IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY SURNAME OF THE WHITE SLAVEOWNERS.”
  • In the index to Carroll County, Mississippi Abstracts of Wills 1834-1875, Divorces 1857-1875, pages 65-67 provide page numbers for references to enslaved people in legal documents regarding the enslavers.
